Mekong delta - 3 day/2 night Tour

We really enjoyed our trip and our stay on the Mekong Delta and would recommend doing this! We booked through our hotel (which was in District 1 - I would really recommend staying there when in HCM - you can get great deals by booking through hotels.com Agoda.com and booking.com) with TNKTravel.

Day 1

We were met by our tour guide, An at 8.10am at our hotel. After a short walk to Ho Chi Minh bus station we joined a bus that had 40 other passengers on it. The bus left the station at 8.20am and we were all given bottled water.

After a 15 minute stop on the way we arrive at "My Tho" at 10.30am following a scenic journey. After a short walk we arrive at a place which makes honey. We saw bees, took some photos then were sat down and given a  delicious honey drink. We were each given a plate of fruit and the local band performed 3 beautiful Vietnamese songs. It's a nice time to relax after the bus journey and the honey drink and fruit are very fresh. (Note: You are encouraged by the guide to tip the band, also, honey (200,000dong) is available for purchase as is the CD from the band-$5 USD.

We then took a small row boat down the Mekong; this was a highlight! Four people in each boat and women are encouraged to wear the traditional Vietnamese hat which is provided on each row boat. (You are again encouraged to tip here recommended 25cents per person).

When we got off the row boat we were overcome by the smell of Coconut. We arrived at a family business making Coconut candy, your not pushed to buy any but after trying it but we had to buy some! So tasty! (30,000 for candy) also, some of our group tried the "snake whiskey" which was around £4 a bottle.

After this we then took a big boat for 20 minutes for our stop for lunch.

At this point some of our group had been guided to another area for lunch, they were around the same age as our parents - we can only assume that they paid a lot more for the trip.

Our included lunch was tasty and we were satisfied. Lunch was rice, egg, vegetables and a choice of pork or fried tofu. You can order extras if you wish and drinks aren't included but are 20,000dong for a soft drink or beer. We didn't feel that there was any need to tip here, no one came to collect our plates or anything afterwards. We left here at 2.20pm after arriving at 1.30pm. Back on the boat for 25 minutes.

After leaving the boat we then got back on the bus for just 5 minutes and we stopped at a Pagoda. We stayed here for 20 minutes then got back on the bus at 3.15pm.

We then continued on the bus until we were dropped off (about ten of us in total) at 6pm. (For those who chose the hotel option they had to continue on the bus for another half an hour. Some people from the trip told us hotel was basic but clean)

After a short walk and getting a 30 minute boat ride we arrived in "Can Tho" at Hung's Homestay at 6.30pm. Click here to see our homestay in Can Tho. This was definitely one of the highlights from the trip. Not exactly being a proper "homestay" as each room is separate from the owners house. It was definitely a great experience staying here! You can also book to stay here on booking.com and can get a bus to Can tho directly from Ho Chi Minh if you don't want to do the tour option!

After meeting Hung he showed us to room 4, we had a river view room with a bench outside to sit. Our room consisted of a double bed with mosquito net, a mirror, fan and small bathroom - toilet flushed, shower only had cold water. Basic but clean. Door locked with padlock and key. We felt safe here.

As we paid $10 USD more for the "homestay" option we had dinner here included. We arrived at 7pm and sat on a table with two Dutch, two Hungarians and a Japanese man and had a great night! We were given everything to make our own Vietnamese spring rolls and then were shown to the kitchen and instructed How to cook them. This was great fun! On arriving back to our table it was full of plates of vegetables, fresh fish, tofu in a spicy tomato sauce and all the ingredients to make our own rice paper rolls! Shortly after, our cooked spring rolls were brought to us. The food was delicious and there was plenty of it!

After dinner we were brought "rice liquor" which we were told was 35% alcohol, in a bag using a chopstick as a stopper and everyone had a shot each! I don't think any of us really enjoyed it, it tasted a lot like tequila and we stuck to the cold beers which were in the fridge for 20,000dong each.

After a long day and great evening we left for bed Around 11pm ready for our early 6.20am start!

We definitely discovered Vietnamese local culture by the very loud noise of the boat engines at 4am on their way to the market! We fell straight back to sleep but if this bothers you I'd advise asking for a garden room on the other side of the river as the people who stayed in there weren't disturbed. The Noise is VERY loud!!

Day 2

Up at 6am, the included breakfast of a fresh bread roll, cheese, jam and tea and coffee served at 6.20am and we left with our belongings at 6.50am to meet the rest of our tour group at 7.20am boat swap and to go and see the Can Tho floating market. This isn't like a floating market in Thailand, you can't buy any souvenirs here but you can see the local Vietnamese people buying  their fruit and vegetables. A real floating market which our guide An explained as technology is changing he doubts this will still be going in 10 years time.

It's still early but you can purchase some noodle soup here, you can also purchase coffee and other drinks.

The boat then took us to stop off to a Noodle factory - this was actually really interesting to see how the noodles we have been eating are made! Brief look and toilet stop then back on the boat at 9am.

Shortly after we arrived at a village  It was our choice now whether to stay and enjoy the gardens here or hire a bicycle (this cost 50,000 dong per bike) most of our group decided to hire the bikes and our guide An guided us to see "monkey bridge" a bridge made from bamboo which the locals use to Carry their stock over to their home. We then rode to a "temple" this was where a bomb had been dropped in the War which had caused the tree there to break off and grow all around, quite a cool stop!

We arrived back at the gardens an hour later at 10.30am and were shown the "rat and frog BBQ" many people tasted it but didn't really enjoy it.

After leaving on the boat again at 11am we arrived at a local restaurant within a hotel (some of the group had stayed at) at 11.40am lunch cost us 115,000 for two (noodles and meat with rice).
Note: We left our big rucksacks in Our hotel in Hoi Chi Minh but if you need to bring them with you please note that if you stay at the Homestay you need to take these with you, those who stayed in the hotel left their bags at this hotel and collected them on arriving for lunch. Just something to be aware of as it was really hot when we visited even that early in the morning and it's hard work with heavy bags!

After lunch we then said goodbye to those who were going back to Ho Chi Minh as they were doing the 2 day tour. Our group got smaller as there were 15 of us doing the 3 day tour.
Note: We didn't do our homework beforehand and chose to do the 3 day, we didn't realise that the 3 day is mainly catered to those who are ending the trip in Cambodia as you travel further towards the Vietnam/Cambodian border. That said, we really did enjoy the further stops we made, but it does mean a 7 hour trip back to Ho Chi Minh if that's where you're heading.

After 3 hours with a short stop off we arrived at Tra Su forest at 4pm. This was beautiful. No tourists at all - An, our guide told us that this is unknown and not in the Lonely planet. There were so many wild birds here. After a short walk we got on a boat through the Mekong and then onto a very small rowing boat through eucalyptus trees. It was very beautiful and a very peaceful place.

After another hour on the bus we arrive to our hotel for the night in Chau Doc at 6.30pm, wifi connection is really good in the room, bottle water is provided and most importantly it's clean! Our guide An told us of a good local restaurant just around the corner from the hotel and it didn't disappoint, very cheap also! Note: there is also street food around the other corner and a Jolibee (fast food chicken place) next door to the hotel. An explained that this is mainly a place you stay before you head to Cambodia so there's not much around and he said its not safe for us at night. We retired to bed early anyway exhausted after the second long day!

Day 3

After a good breakfast at the hotel with finally a good coffee we leave the hotel at 6.40am, all our belongings left in the Hotel lobby. We walk to a boat and are taken to see a Fishing village and fish farm - I didn't have high expectations for this place but it was actually quite interesting to see how they got their fish, how they live on house boats and walking across the small bridge with bamboo rail to the small village. You can also buy some lovely handmade scarves here if you wish.

At 8.15am we said goodbye to most of our group who were heading to Phnom Penh, Cambodia via speedboat. Their luggage had already been collected and taken onto the speedboat. I'm not sure of the cost of this but we spoke to two guys who said they initially wanted to take a trip up the Mekong River from HCM directly to Phnom Penh but said that they were quoted A LOT more than the cost of this trip.
The speedboat also takes four hours.

We arrived back in HCM at 4pm after stopping for an hour for lunch.

Just as a guide we spent $170 in total.
$55 each for trip. = $110
$60 = all food, beers, bicycle rental, tips, coconut candy and souvenirs.

Note: There is a stunning photo used for advertising this trip and that is of Tra Su forest so you have to do the 3 day tour to see this.

Note: We paid $55USD each for our trip which included one night in a homestay, with the second being a night in a hotel. The tour included two breakfasts, one lunch and one dinner. All transportation costs were also included in the price.
You can also cater the trip to you and upgrade to better hotels, we didn't but the homestay and hotel we stayed in were much better than many of the 3 star hotels we had stayed in on our travels!

This trip was the perfect way to start our adventure in Vietnam, our guide An who spoke better English than me grew up in the Mekong and was so knowledgeable. If you do decide to go with TNKtravel request for An!!

It was a tiring few days but the amount we saw and did was just great! I would definitely do it again.

How to travel from Bangkok, Thailand to Siem Reap, Cambodia for less than £10 (€13) each!!

Time line of journey from Bangkok to Siem Reap.

Make sure you check out the tips for the trip at the bottom! It's better to prepare yourself for this journey!

After hearing about the potential scams, we found that it wasn't as bad as previous years.

5am - Taxi to Hua Lamphong train station, Bangkok. Get your hostel/hotel (we stayed at iSanook) to call a taxi for you so it's on the meter! We stayed in Silom, 10 minutes drive from the station.

Cost: 50baht (split by two - 25baht each)

5.15am - Get your tickets. Go to the ticket counter, it's not hard to miss. Ask for the 5.55am ticket to Aranyaprathet. I wrote it down on a piece of paper and showed it to the man at the counter with the time.

Cost: 48baht. Total so far: 73baht

5.55am - We leave. Train leaves slightly later and arrives at Aranyaprathet station at 12pm (it said on ticket arrival is 11.35am) but this is quite good for Thai-(never on)-time!

12pm - Arrive at train station. Tuk Tuks outside of the station will try to charge 100baht, you can bargain down to 80baht, I didn't see or hear anyone get any lower! You want to go to the border, be careful they may try and stop outside a travel agency. To avoid this if they mention about a visa just say you have an e-visa.

Cost: 80baht (split by two - 40baht) Total so far: 113baht

From here, it's pretty simple. All you need to do is just walk through Thai immigration and get your passport stamped out of Thailand. When you leave here you then walk into the Immigration office on the right hand side of the road, you're in Poi pet which is full of casinos and this office is just before the holiday palace casino. (If you have an e-visa you don't need to come into this office. Just walk 100 yards passed the casinos and you will see a sign saying "ARRIVALS"). It took us about 5 minutes to get our VISA, we gave them our passport and paid $30 US Dollars and then 100baht each because we  didn't have a passport photo. I've heard about scams here but again just be careful and know how much your paying.

We then walked 100 yards with our visa to "ARRIVALS" on the right hand side of the road. We queued for about 10 minutes filled out an arrival card and got stamped into Cambodia. I had read before that it takes a lot longer (45mins-1hr) because they take fingerprints. However, they did not use the fingerprint scanner. The place was under a shelter so even in the hot midday sun we felt cool there.

The "free shuttle bus" is free and takes you to a bus terminal. Here you can book a taxi ($12 each for 4people), a minibus ($10 each) or normal bus ($9 each)

We opted for the minibus because the man said it was about to leave (it left 30 minutes later) but it was a good option, it had 10 people on there, it was very spacious, comfortable with leather seats and air con.
Our minibus left at 2.30pm

Cost: $9 US dollars (320baht). Total so far: 433baht

The minibus driver made a toilet stop (at a shop where you had to buy something to use the toilet), then we arrived somewhere where a lot of tuk tuks were waiting for us at 5.15pm.

They tell you it's a free tuk tuk to the centre but it's just to take you to travel agency's and guest houses to stay and book tours. By this point we were really tired, we didn't want to book anything until we got to our guesthouse (Siem Reap Rooms Guesthouse). We negotiated with the tuk tuk driver to take us straight to our guesthouse for $3

Cost: $3 (110baht. Split by two: 55baht each)

Overall total: 488 Thai baht or $13.66 US Dollars or £9.85 GBP or €12.50 euros per person!

Tips:
1. Make sure you get a taxi on the meter, they always say "traffic" and try to charge you three times the price. Ask your hotel to book you one and then it will be on the meter.

2. Get to the train station early! The train will be there so i recommend to get on it as soon as possible. Locals use this train and there are only two a day so it gets busy quickly.

3. Upstairs in Hua Lamphong station there is a bakery where you can buy food for 40-60baht. Buy something and take it on the train. They do sell drinks & food on the train but it is nothing special.

4. Get a seat on the left side of the train to make sure you don't have the sun on you the whole way. It's pretty cool though with the fans and Windows open the whole way!

5. Now have your wits about you! The tuk tuk from the station may try to take you to a travel agency where they will complete your visa forms for you and charge you more money for a visa. If the tuk tuk driver says anything about a visa just say you have an e-visa! Ours didn't say anything and took us straight to the border. 80-100baht tuk tuk to border from Aranyprathet, you will find people to split it with if your a single traveller.

6. There's nothing in Aranyaprathet so don't stop there at all, make sure you get straight in the tuk tuk! If you need cash/food you can get this at the border. It isn't a scam. We changed our baht for US dollars at an currency exchange in a bank and we got a good rate!

7. They will accept Thai baht everywhere up until you arrive in Siem Reap so don't panic if you don't have US Dollars by now!

8. The visa is $30 and 100baht if you need a passport photo. If they try to charge more my advice would be just to talk loudly so everyone else there can hear, they will soon want you quickly gone and charge you correctly.

9. There are very official looking "immigration points" where the men in uniform look legitimate. We asked how much for visa (for our own curiosity) and he wanted $40. Stick to the main points as I've explained in the blog.

10. Get your passport stamped out of Thailand and then proceed to get your Cambodian visa.

11. Use the "free shuttle bus" service. By this time you definitely would have met others doing the same as you - get talking to them and if there's 4 of you I would definitely opt for getting the taxi!

12. Be careful when they make the stop in the minibus. They don't use Thai/US coins in Cambodia so all the change is in Cambodian Riel. A guy we met bought a beer for 40baht, he gave the lady 100baht and she gave him back 2,000 Cambodian Riel which worked out to be 18baht instead of his 60baht change. He managed to get the money back easily, but just be careful! I recommend getting the www.XE.com app, it updates every time you have an Internet connection and is perfect to check your not being ripped off!

13. We were tired and hungry so just told the "free tuk tuk" driver we didn't want to stop anywhere only our guesthouse, ok we had to pay $3 but by this point we were tired after a 4.30am wake up! If you know where you're staying you can for sure use the free tuk tuk service and just say no when you arrive at the centre to save more money.

I hope this helps you on your travel across the border.
Please pass on to a friend if they too are doing the same

Overnight Sleeper train to Bangkok - My Diary

We travelled from Surat Thani to Bangkok earlier this month. We decided to experience the over night sleeper train. Here is a diary of how our night went.

Firstly, we booked online via 12goasia.com - remember you have to book more than 84hours before scheduled departure. They always charge an online fee but it will cost more going to a travel agency. It's a manual booking service so they get your online request and then book tickets manually. We requested a first class sleeper but it wasn't available so we got our second choice which was 2nd class air con. You pay the full amount then they refund you the difference - it says the refund is in cash but when we collected our tickets at Surat Thani Parcels office they had no idea about any cash refund. We contacted 12goasia who said that it was too much cash to send them to refund us so it is being processed as a refund to our account. We asked for email confirmation of this and it was sent immediately confirming the pending refund.

6.15pm -we get told to wait at Platform 1, but we are confused because there is a train at platform 2 and the next scheduled train departure is at 8.14pm???

6.30pm - We show another member of staff our ticket and he directs us to platform 2, checking with another two members of staff we confirm this is the right train. So be sure to double check with different staff members.

6.35pm - We board the train, booking an upper berth and lower berth at the same time means our seats are opposite each other, and therefor one above and the directly below. Perfect! The leather seats are very spacious and are really comfortable.
The luggage stands are between each two seats making it perfect to keep an eye on your luggage whilst traveling.

7pm - The train hasn't moved yet but there's a few noises (adding the other carriages). A lady comes around and gives us a Food menu. All items are set dishes with rice, fruit and fruit juice for 170-210baht, you can order a seafood set menu for two for 420baht. You can also order breakfast 100-150baht.

7.10pm - she comes back around to take orders, we decline because we want to explore the "restaurant cart" later on. The train is now moving.

7.25pm - A man comes around and ties the baggage to make sure it doesn't move. We've counted four guards walking down the aisles, our tickets have been checked. Not sure if we are going to be able to drink our Changs on here?! (There has been an alcohol ban on these trains for the last few years.)

8.00pm - The lady who took food orders earlier starts bringing people their food. Those people have their tables set out by the lady.

8.30pm - A man starts coming round and starts to set up the beds - you don't have to yet but most of the people in the carriage have, looks like we are in a quiet carriage. We agree and decide to walk down to the restaurant. All linen is clean, you have a pillow, fitted white sheet and a blanket.

9.30pm - After requesting some changes with ingredients on the set menu successfully with the Thai lady we've eaten and paid our Bill of 340baht. The restaurant is small and all the windows are open so it's very loud from the train. It's hard walking back it's about five carriages until we reach ours and people have started sleeping anyway in the third classes. The train also stops at this point and picks a lot of people up, no clue where we are!

10pm - We both sit/lay in the bed on the lower berth and play cards for a bit, it's private and both berths have curtains.

10.30pm - I retire to the upper berth using the ladder and it is quite easy to get into bed. The upper berth is A LOT smaller than the lower berth even for little 5ft4 me, although there's plenty of room to stretch out.

0530am - I wake and it sounds like the train is making some stops. I can hear a woman calling "tea, coffee, milo"

0600am - a lot of movement, I open my curtain and the lady is there asking for hot drinks, I order a coffee for 40baht. The man who put the beds together last night then puts our beds back into seats.

0700am - train stops at Hua Lamphong train station, Bangkok.

TIPS
1. Let the lady with the food menu take your food order for the evening meal to have at your seat. The restaurants nothing special and can be far away to where your allocated seats are and its Nicer to sit in your seat especially if you have 1st or 2nd class.

2. If there are two of you and you want to be together make sure you book an upper and a lower berth! Note difference in price: for this time and the 2nd class AC sleeper it was 768baht for lower berth and 698baht for the upper berth, booking fee is 650baht, but you would pay more going into a travel agency.

3. You will find Western toilets onboard look for them, toilet roll provided. Hand wash at sink.

4. If you can't sleep with the light on then you must book a lower berth. An upper berth despite the curtain you can see the light brightening up the hallway - these don't turn off! Take an eye mask for the light and ear plugs for sure because you can hear people snoring.

5. Don't order breakfast. The food is basic, you'll be off the train early and unless you've booked early check in (You can request early check in when booking your hotel HERE and HERE),  its probably worth going to sit somewhere for breakfast after you've got off the train. It will more than likely be cheaper too. There are places in the train station that will be open at this time.

6. There is lots of security onboard, it felt quite safe and we didn't have any of our belongings stolen. We did however keep our cash, phone on us at all times for peace of mind.

7. Make sure your electronics are fully charged and you've charged any spare batteries that you will need - there are plug sockets onboard but it's hit and miss whether there will be one near you and it's likely they are already being used.

8. Alcohol is not served on here due to an incident a few years ago. We brought beer on but didn't feel comfortable drinking it. It's possible in first class, it is more private.

9. This is a perfect way to travel, saving you money off accommodation for the night and getting from A to B.

10. Note you can only collect your train tickets on the day of departure so make sure you are aware of the times they are open. To collect tickets in Surat Thani we were aware that the parcels office (the allocated collection point in ST) was open 24hours. Make no mistake they aren't all open 24 hours! They aren't all in train station as well. Double check!

11. If you want to spend less opt for 2nd class sleeper with a fan, it's cheaper and a lot of people told us it was great, a couple actually said they walked into the Aircon cabin and they thought it was too cold.

I hope this helps and if it did, please share it with your friends or other people you think may benefit from the blog.

Happy travels

Why you should go to Koh Samui

For £25 a night we truly found a bargain in Samui Verticolor booked through hotels.com which includes a breakfast buffet (with an egg station)

This brightly coloured hotel offers double rooms and family rooms. Each day you get two bottles of water free, there is a large, clean swimming pool and kids pool with a pool bar that offers Cocktails for 90baht at Happy hour (they are delish!!) Room service is reasonable and enjoyable with dishes 179baht which includes those extra charges we all hate!
It's Located just off Chaweng Beach Road, if your a budget conscious traveler like me then this place will be perfect for you! I've actually paid more on the other islands for less!
They do offer limited housekeeping so don't expect anything special (fancy towel swans) but you will always come back to your room with your bed made and fresh towels!
So yes, book this hotel!! Find out the latest price HERE
Tip: if your checking out early on your final day don't forget to ask for a breakfast box to go the night before!

Anyway that's enough of our hotel..

There are a number of resorts to stay which offer pure luxury! Ko Samui really has it all its a mix of being perfect for your honeymoon destination, that bit of nightlife that you want (see Ark bar), food stalls and the most amazing seafood!

Ko Samui tips

1. Get a scooter and don't waste your cash on around the island tours! It's easy to see Wat Plai Laem (the most beautiful Buddhist temple I've seen in Thailand so far) and the Big Buddha. As well as traveling to the beautiful beaches & Fishermans village, Bophut. You can get a scooter for 24hours rent from 150baht, if you have want one for a few days make sure you bargain the price! Unfortunately they will want your passport as deposit although it's illegal to do that it's either that or giving them 5000baht deposit. Up to you! Remember to take photos/a video of the bike so when you give it back they can't try to charge you for scratches that the people five times before did... What a good money maker for them!

2. Visit Fishermans village, Bophut, a street of restaurants that's got something for everyone, whether you want Thai, Western.. Remember though Thai is always much cheaper! Visit "The Hut" our friends who lived in Ko Samui recommended this as the best Thai food! There's no beach view but most dishes are less than 100baht (to get here you just turn right once you enter the main entrance of Fishermans village - it's easy to understand what the main entrance is)

3. Take a trip to Ang Thong National Park, we went with Highsea Tour 1300baht each for 550baht more you can kayak also. Food included bread & marmalade tea/coffee for breakfast. Thai buffet for lunch including vegetarian option and a salad. Hike up to see the amazing view points. It's certainly worth doing because it is so beautiful, but bear in mind that you will spend a lot of time on the boat. We also got back really late, they told us 4:30pm, but we actually arrived back at 7:40pm.

4. Visit the numerous night markets and "food courts" this is what real Thailand is about right?? You can get Meat/seafood skewers starting from 40baht, those delicious corn on the cobs for 40baht or if you fancy buying a whole fish your looking at 150baht and up (size depends) there will literally be a stall here for all the family to be able to eat! The service is great everyone's so friendly, there's usually a band playing and to get you in the mood you have cocktail stands making anything and everything with plenty of alcohol for 70baht each. They make a mean Mojito and Strawberry Daquiri.

5. Head to the 'W Retreat'. its north on any of the free maps you get given. Not only is it beautiful and you can enjoy the private beach there, but on Mondays they do "Movie Mondays". They show a movie on a big screen on the beach, seating is their huge beanbags - so comfortable! They give out free popcorn but you will have to buy something, its around 120baht for a soft drink, more for beers and cocktails. It all starts at 8pm, but don't forget to book to reserve your bean bag.
